Common English Similes

Compiled by Leon  ©2007-2008

Foreword

Dear Simile Searcher:

Unfortunately, the following list of English similes is not comprehensive & it is not in any particular order, except in the order that they came to mind.  Some of these similes may be regional and I'm from the U.S., so, you may want to keep that in mind.

Please notice that I've divided the list of similes into categories of
     (1) explicit similes (similes which have explicit meanings)
     (2) implicit similes (similes which have implicit meanings)

These terms, namely 'explicit simile' and 'implicit simile', were coined by me, Leon of Leon's EFL Planet.  Any similarity to other terms coined by others are purely coincidental.  No plagiarism was done here.  I honestly do not know if others have similar labels or not.

At the bottom, I've included a list of common metaphorical collocations, which may appear like similes, but are not.

The most important SIMILES you'll ever learn

"Like a Thief in the Night"

"Like lightning"
